Key workers and mental health
Struggling with mental health problems is a common experience for many people. However, now more than ever, you might be feeling like your mental health is suffering. This could be for a number of reasons, anxiety about COVID-19, worries about financial implications or separation from family. However, if you’re a key worker you may find yourself struggling even more. You may be working longer hours than usual, and you may be the only person going out to work each day. The industry that you work in may be under more pressure than ever, due to demand. Therefore, you may be busier, and the environment you work in may be stressful. This could lead to additional stress and worries for you and your family.
What is a key worker?
Before the arrival of COVID-19 we had never heard of key workers before. But then we went into lockdown and suddenly only key workers were allowed to continue going to work. Very simply, these people who were on the list of occupations that the government said were vital. These include:
- Healthcare staff
- Schools and nurseries
- Police officers
- Court staff
- Supermarket staff
- Delivery Workers
This incredible group of people have continued to work throughout lockdown, and this includes the staff at Health Connections Patient Transport Service. Therefore, we are very conscious of ensuring our staff are taking care of their mental health. As employers, it’s essential we are supportive of our staff and recognise when things may be taking a toll on them. If they are stressed or anxious, we want them to know they are not alone in feeling this way. We are all adjusting to new ways of doing things and having the future be quite uncertain. This is why it’s more important than ever to take care of your mental health and recognise when you may start to feel stressed.
